What are selkies?
Selkies are shape-shifting mythical creatures of the British Isles. They are seals who can transform on land to human form. Legend has it that, if a man catches a selkie and brings her home, he must steal her seal skin and hide it. She may love her life on land. But she longs for the sea, and will always try to find her skin in order to return to her natural element.
What is this substack?
The essays here are about living female, in and out of our element, trapped and free, content and troubled.
Living female, in the United States in the 21st century, means shape shifting, often against our will. Our means of living freely — our skins — are sometimes stolen from us. And so we keep looking for where they’re holed up and hidden.
